Cynth V.1 / Bachelor's thesis

A voltage-controlled analog synthesizer.

I designed and assembled Cynth V.1 for my electrical engineering bachelor's thesis. The instrument combines a controller, oscillator, filter, amplifier, envelope generator, and power supply.

Instrument design.

The design targets six waveforms, independent pitch and gate control, frequency modulation, and a 12 dB/octave filter.

Signal and control.

Controller

Separate pitch, gate, and modulation outputs with a 0–5 V control range.

Oscillator

Sawtooth, square, pulse, reverse saw, triangle, and sine outputs. Coarse and fine tuning, FM input, and pulse-width control.

Filter and amplifier

The signal passes from VCO to VCF to VCA. Low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filtering combine with ADSR envelope shaping.

The hardware.

Thesis results.

The thesis presentation reports tuning across the 0–5 V control range, filter operation, amplitude control, and envelope shaping.
